{"id":18568,"date":"2024-11-13T17:09:08","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T22:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/environmental-health\/?page_id=18568"},"modified":"2024-11-13T17:09:08","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T22:09:08","slug":"fluoridation-in-drinking-water","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/environmental-health\/environmental-health-services\/fluoridation-in-drinking-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Fluoridation in Drinking Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is aware of the National Toxicology Program\u2019s recent review on fluoride exposure, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ntp.niehs.nih.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-08\/fluoride_final_508.pdf\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Monograph on the State of the Science Concerning Fluoride Exposure and Neurodevelopment and Cognition: A Systematic Review<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (August 2024) and the subsequent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cand.uscourts.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/17-cv-2162-Food-_-Water-Watch-Inc.-et-al.-v.-EPA-et-al-Opinion.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ruling by a federal court in California<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (September 2024) urging the EPA to take regulatory action regarding fluoride levels.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">At this time, VDH, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oral-health\/prevention\/about-fluoride.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, recommend the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/environmental-health\/public-health-toxicology\/fluoride\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">fluoride<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to prevent cavities. However, VDH is interested in ongoing research related to fluoride.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Additionally, VDH is committed to delivering safe drinking water to Virginians and working with Virginia waterworks to keep communities informed of developments related to drinking water treatment decisions.
