The reported data enhances our understanding of the number of students who require additional support during school hours. It ensures that an adequate number of staff members are trained to care for students with specific health needs, including asthma, Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, life-threatening allergies (such as anaphylactic reactions), adrenal insufficiency, and seizures. This data provides regional awareness and insights into students' needs.
The data is self-reported by the school division. Please contact the school division with questions.
For any given indicator, the range of values has been divided into five equal groups or quintiles. A higher quintile indicates a higher value.
Encounter:
A student crossing the threshold of the clinic for a service and/or school health staff response to a treatment or an emergency outside of the clinic.
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN):
A healthcare professional responsible for components of a school health program for a school population as defined by the school division. LPNs are supervised and report directly to licensed Registered Nurses, Physicians, and Nurse Practitioners.
Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) or Health Aide:
An unlicensed paraprofessional trained to provide care to individuals. UAPs are restricted in their scope of responsibilities and perform duties assigned under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
Paraprofessionals:
Also known as paraeducators, special education paraprofessionals, teaching assistants, instructional assistants, or edtech, are appropriately trained employees who assist and are supervised by qualified professional staff. In a school, UAP may be paraprofessionals, classroom assistants, administrators, teachers, bus monitors or drivers, playground attendants, office staff or health aides.
Registered Nurse (RN):
A healthcare professional responsible for components of a school health program for a school population as defined by the school division.
Full-time School Health Personnel:
Personnel employed by or contracted by the local school division to provide school health services. To be considered full-time, employees must work 30+ hours a week while school is in session.
Part-time School Health Personnel:
Personnel employed by or contracted by the local school division to provide school health services. To be considered part-time, employees must work 29 hours a week or less while school is in session.
Supplemental School Health Personnel:
Additional staff employed or contracted for a special assignment such as 1:1 care for a student, specific care for a student or group of students. If the RN, LPN, or UAP is not contracted by the School Division itself, please do not include those individuals in these counts below.
