🎆Let’s Throw an Infection Prevention Party!

International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW) is October 19–25 and a great reason to have a party! A simple way to add flare to your celebration is with the brand-new Cheers for Peers certificate. This communication describes recent updates to the Virginia Regulations for Disease Reporting and Control. These regulations were brought into compliance with changes in the field of communicable disease detection and control. The regulations were modified to conform to Chapter 375 of the 2024 Virginia Acts of Assembly.

VDH is providing updated recommendations for the management of healthcare personnel (HCP) exposed to or infected with COVID-19 or seasonal influenza. Healthcare facilities should evaluate VDH recommendations and consider updating HCP return to work and management guidance. These recommendations are not regulatory requirements or mandates.

These recommendations replace the 2013 guidelines. New recommendations include: (1) new antiretroviral drug regimens for postexposure prophylaxis (PEP); (2) a shortened duration of post-exposure follow-up HIV testing; (3) elimination of routine laboratory tests for antiretroviral drug toxicity; and (4) considerations for PEP for healthcare personnel with exposures to source patients with undetectable viral loads.

This Health Advisory summarizes CDC recommendations for U.S. public health departments, clinical laboratories, and healthcare workers about potential Ebola virus disease case identification, testing, and biosafety considerations in clinical laboratories.  

¿Qué hay en el agua?

Hayley Andrews, prevencionista de infecciones en el suroeste región de Virginia, su mente curiosa y su deseo de educar a otros para Ayuda descubrir la contaminación ambiental que causó una enfermedad en uno de los sus pacientes.

El centro de Hayley admitió a un paciente con sepsis y los hemocultivos crecieron Aeromonas hydrophila.  Debido a queHayley nunca había oído hablar de este organismo, lo investigó y aprendió que generalmente es un organismo transmitido por el agua.  Hayley llevó esta información a la unidad de enfermería donde se encontraba el paciente y el hijo del paciente la escuchó educando a las enfermeras sobre Aeromonas.  Él se unió y mencionó que su mamá tenía un pozo y que le preocupaba que pudiera estar contaminado.

El departamento de salud visitó la casa y analizó el agua. Efectivamente, estaba contaminado con Aeromonas y otros organismos, y no pasó las pruebas de potabilidad. El departamento de salud pudo conseguirle a la paciente una fuente alternativa de agua segura después de su alta para prevenir más infecciones hasta que el agua de su pozo pudiera ser remediada. 

¡Gracias , Hayley! ¡Ynuestra diligencia evitó que este paciente volviera a enfermar, y tal vez evitó que otros vecinos tuvieran un resultado similar!
